Gary Shankman

Gary Shankman received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Boston University and his Master of
Fine Arts in painting from American University. He continued his studies at the Koninklijke Acadamie
voor Schone Kunsten , Antwerp Belgium when he received an ITT International Fellowship Grant. Upon
returning stateside, Gary received a scholarship to Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in
Maine. Besides participating in group shows throughout the United States, Gary has had solo exhibitions
in Antwerp, Belgium, Washington D.C., London, England, Alexandria, Va., and Albany, N.Y. Gary’s
paintings are included in collections of Superior Court Art Trust, Washington D.C., the American
University Museum, Washington D.C., and Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Shawnee, Oklahoma. His
biography has been published in Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who in American Education, and
Who’s Who among American Teachers. Gary has been Artist-Residence for the State of Oklahoma and
for the city of Rockville, Md. His work has been reviewed in the Washington Post Newspaper, the New
York Times, The Sun , Baltimore, Md., and the Field Magazine, London, England.
While at Sage College of Albany where he is a full professor, Gary has taught Painting, Beginning
Drawing, Intermediate Drawing, Figure Drawing, and 2D Design. He is also coordinator of the Fine Art
Program. During the summer, Gary conducts courses for the Smithsonian Institution. Before coming to
Sage, Gary taught for Maryland College of Art and Design, the University of D.C., and Northern Virginia
Community College. When not teaching, Gary is painting still lifes and landscapes from direct
observation. He is intrigued by the effects of light in nature. When traveling around Albany, be sure to
